Must Read Post on Ultrarunning Vegan Jerry Armstrong – aka @endurancejer

Jerry Armstrong

Most of you already know Jerry Armstrong from his vegan testimonial and on twitter (@endurancejer). He has written a great post over at Trail and Ultrarunning. He talks about his food routine and how he fuels his body for ultra efforts.

Money quote (when discussing the oldest question of all for vegans, “where do you get your protein?”) —–

“The biggest misconceptions about vegan nutrition come from people who know nothing about it. It’s like asking your grandmother for her opinion about Twitter…”

Are Human’s Natural Carnivores?

Kathy Freston over at Huffington Post wrote a great article Shattering the Meat Myth: Humans are Natural Vegetarians. She does a great job highlighting features of human physiology that make the case that we are not made to eat meat.

Money quote:

Says Dr. William C. Roberts, editor of the American Journal of Cardiology, “Although we think we are, and we act as if we are, human beings are not natural carnivores. When we kill animals to eat them, they end up killing us, because their flesh, which contains cholesterol and saturated fat, was never intended for human beings, who are natural herbivores.”

A Real Carnivore Eating

A Great Quote – Carl Sagan

“All of us cherish our beliefs. They are, to a degree, self-defining. When someone comes along who challenges our belief system as insufficiently well-based — or who, like Socrates, merely asks embarrassing questions that we haven’t thought of, or demonstrates that we’ve swept key underlying assumptions under the rug — it becomes much more than a search for knowledge. It feels like a personal assault.”

Early in 2012 I started reaching out to vegan friends on twitter to ask them to share their testimonials. My hope was that by getting vegans to share their stories we could educate and inspire others and give people first hand accounts to replace perceptions or stereotypes. I’m incredibly grateful to those that have participated. Their stories speak for themselves! If you enjoy the series please let us know!

I’d like to start by thanking Peter (@readyforplanb) for inspiring me to write this blog. As many of you know, I’ve been going through a nutritional transformation over the last few months. Well actually, I should say my nutritional well-being has been evolving for over a year to date.

This really all began due to my son’s skin condition, eczema. He had been struggling with it and as a result it was recommended that he go on a gluten free diet. Even before this recommendation, I was interested in a gluten free diet because of my sensitivity to many foods. I decided that in order to make my son’s transition as easy as possible, I would join him on his journey. So as a result, my son and I began our gluten free diets together. His skin cleared up almost completely and my stomach issues pretty much vanished! I want to thank @GFDougie for all his support and information, I’ve really learned a lot from him!

When I was 15 years old I was given a DVD at school. I went home and watched it. It was a factory farm DVD. I watched entire film. Felt sick to my stomach to where I couldn’t even eat a piece a lettuce the rest of the night. The next day I did my research, reached out to my high school friends who were vegetarian. I gave up meat slowly. The last meat given up that was difficult for me at the time was fish. In a matter of time I gave up all meat completely. I was vegetarian up until I was 20 years old.

Theresa and Her Family

My name is Theresa. I am a 36 years old, married and mother of one beautiful little boy.  This is my story.

I first became interested in veganism approximately two years ago after reading an article my sister, Ann, gave me regarding the connection between inflammation in the body and dairy. I was immediately interested – at the time I had already undergone five knee surgeries in my left knee, was in terrible pain and desperate for relief other than narcotic pain medication.  In addition, I was hoping to lose at least 50 pounds of the weight I packed on. Before the surgeries and the birth of my son, I weighed 120 pounds and at 5’7, I was thin and very active.  I loved to dance, hike, walk long distance, ride my bike, work out, camp and just be outdoors.

Kevin Racing the Tough Mudder

I’m ArmedVegan –  aka Kevin.  I took up the name when I started making significant changes towards healthy living.  I chose ArmedVegan because I live by, “Mens sana in corpore sano” – a sound mind in a healthy body.  I believe that includes nutrition, fitness, open-mindedness, education, and self-defense.

I’m currently 5’7’ tall and weigh 140 lbs. I was 165 lbs at my heaviest before I was vegan. My family has been supportive, though they were reluctant at first.  I got the, “You look so skinny” for a while until I found my groove.  I try small suggestions and give them tastes in hopes of inspiring them to eat healthier too.
