Must Read Post on Ultrarunning Vegan Jerry Armstrong – aka @endurancejer

Jerry Armstrong

Most of you already know Jerry Armstrong from his vegan testimonial and on twitter (@endurancejer). He has written a great post over at Trail and Ultrarunning. He talks about his food routine and how he fuels his body for ultra efforts.

Money quote (when discussing the oldest question of all for vegans, “where do you get your protein?”) —–

“The biggest misconceptions about vegan nutrition come from people who know nothing about it. It’s like asking your grandmother for her opinion about Twitter…”

Are Human’s Natural Carnivores?

Kathy Freston over at Huffington Post wrote a great article Shattering the Meat Myth: Humans are Natural Vegetarians. She does a great job highlighting features of human physiology that make the case that we are not made to eat meat.

Money quote:

Says Dr. William C. Roberts, editor of the American Journal of Cardiology, “Although we think we are, and we act as if we are, human beings are not natural carnivores. When we kill animals to eat them, they end up killing us, because their flesh, which contains cholesterol and saturated fat, was never intended for human beings, who are natural herbivores.”

A Real Carnivore Eating

Vegan Testimonial – Neil Williams aka @cornwallcats

Early in 2012 I started reaching out to vegan friends on twitter to ask them to share their testimonials. My hope was that by getting vegans to share their stories we could educate and inspire others and give people first hand accounts to replace perceptions or stereotypes. I’m incredibly grateful to those that have participated. Their stories speak for themselves! If you enjoy the series please let us know!

In the early 1980′s, I decided that I could no longer eat animals, so I cut out the flesh and fish and gradually stopped eating eggs as often.

On Boxing Day in 1983, I went on my first Hunt Sab (this means sabotaging a fox hunt by spraying the area they’d hunt for foxes in with a strong smelling scent and trying to prevent them from getting a kill). On the way back in the van after a long, cold and wet day, I asked if anyone wanted one of my sandwiches. “What’s in them?” “Cheese and tomato.” “No thanks, we’re vegans.” This was my introduction to veganism. Yes, the cheese was vegetarian but WHY wouldn’t they eat it. I asked, and as I found out, there was more to compassion than just giving up eating animals. Within a few weeks I’d gone vegan.

Yonni - The Trendy Vegan

I am a vegan.  Those are four words I never thought I’d say.  I grew up on Long Island with Peter Luger’s as a favored destination and looked forward to lobster and steamer dinners at my grandparents’ house.  We ate so much lasagna, stuffed manicotti and chicken parmesan at our house, I often wondered if we had a hidden Italian past!

Yet today, I am a vegan. But it wasn’t simply a choice ~ it was out of respect for my body, and in strong connection, my mind.  After years of digestive issues that began in college and significantly increased over time, I sought the help of a specialist nearly four years ago.  Thousands of dollars and more than a dozen tests later, we learned something that changed the course of my life ~ I had lost the ability to metabolize animal protein.

When I turned vegan, my whole life changed. I had been vegetarian for a long while already. That decision was based on a desire to protect animals, and I had heard snippets about veganism from various sources for a long time. I wasn’t able to go all the way until one day my best friend asked me to accompany her to Red Mango (a frozen yogurt chain). I went with her and we sat down and then I looked at the yogurt she had ordered: fully realizing now what it was, where it came from, and the animals that were harmed in getting it to her plate. That, coupled with a horrendous visit I had to an animal market in Ecuador a few months before, absolutely sealed the deal. I had been practicing veganism for a while, quietly, without telling anyone, seeing if I could do it, but that day I realized I had to complete my transition: I was done.

It is my two dogs, indirectly, and my meat-eating husband, directly, who can take credit for starting me on the path to becoming a vegan.  I had always loved animals in the abstract way that pretty much everyone says they do, and I’d always been opposed to animal testing and wearing fur without really making the connection to the leather shoes I was wearing or how that super-new-improved cosmetic was deemed fit to sell to humans.

Life is an interesting journey and we never know where it’s going to take us. Sometimes what at the time seems like the most innocuous of situations, may change the course of your life forever.

I grew up with animals. We had three dogs when I was little and I’ve always loved dogs, even when I got too close and they bit me in the face. I cried more because the dogs were scolded than from the pain. As I grew older, I accumulated more and more animals–goldfish, the longest living being Garfield, named after my favorite cartoon cat. There was Elvira the parakeet, dubbed so by my neighbor in the Navy who realized he couldn’t care for her when his ship went to sea, and rodents like Bud the Siamese hamster. All of these animals were my family members and I was fascinated by them.

Christian and His Family!

Veganism is so important to me that I want everyone who is not a vegan to know: I’m a normal person and I’m vegan. My wife is a normal person and she’s vegan. Our two and half year old daughter is really normal for a two and a half year old (mine!) and is vegan. No need to be in any created category of self-described progressives, hippies or punks!

The genesis for turning to veganism for us was a concern for “animal rights.” My wife and I were both active in animal rights issues back in our college years of the late 1990s, so embracing animal ethics early in our adult lives set the course for the rest of it.

Some of Samantha's Favorite Food!

I was first introduced to veganism by my friend who asked her friends to ‘be vegan for a week’ as a Christmas present to her. I thought this would be a perfect gift to her, as she really would appreciate it, so I did it.

I had a little trouble at first, because I’m coeliac as well (gluten free), but after researching on the Internet and looking at all the products in my supermarket, I found it so easy. After only a couple of days I felt so healthy; no bloating after meals, my skin looked clear and glowing… I thought, hey, this is doing me good!
